The 5th African Bioacoustics Community Conference 2026
This year the African Bioacoustics Community has the exciting opportunity to host our biennial conference in beautiful Kenya!
The African Bioacoustics Community meets once again for its 5th African Bioacoustics Community conference. For the first time ever, the conference is being hosted outside of South Africa, offering participants the exciting opportunity to visit Kenya!

Located not too far from the hustling and bustling city of Nairobi, on the edge of Lake Naivasha, Sawela Lodges offers premium conference facilities in an idyllic, natural and tranquil environment. The venue is set within a rich and diverse natural soundscape, making it an ideal setting for a bioacoustics conference, while also offering opportunities to encounter local wildlife onsite, including hippos, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, and an impressive variety of birdlife.

This year’s conference promises to be another fascinating and exciting event, with a diverse programme covering numerous research themes. We will hear from a range of experts, including plenary talks from experts in the field. Themes include behaviour and biology, acoustic monitoring and conservation, physiology and evolution, ecoacoustics, advanced technology and methodology, citizen science and science communication.

There will be plenty of opportunities to learn and gain new skills during the conference, including the “Basics of Bioacoustics” special session, field recording workshops, and a Q&A session led by experts, early-career scientists, and students in the field. The final day of the conference will offer participants a choice of workshops covering central technologies and software in bioacoustics.
There will also be the opportunity to express creatively during an immersive sound journey, painting workshop. Tapping into the mindful nature of the acoustic environment, we will connect to nature and ourselves through listening and painting what we hear

On the final evening, we will gather for the Final Banquet event, where we can reflect and connect one last time over a scrumptious, traditional feast, followed by music entertainment.

Also, don’t miss the opportunities to explore some of Kenya’s top tourist attractions just a little further afield!
